GSCE to A-level: bridging the gap

Mind the knowledge gap

While the number of subjects may drop after GCSEs, pace and expectations rise considerably. This shift often catches students and families off guard, which can impact confidence and attainment moving forward. It’s no surprise then that the idea of targeted ‘bridging’ tuition is gaining traction among those looking to get ahead.

Supporting the move from GCSE to A-level study involves addressing knowledge gaps and building on strong GCSE foundations – paving the way towards the more complex, in-depth study to come. It focuses on instilling the right academic habits, covering the time management, note-taking and revision strategies A-level students will need. And it helps to reduce ‘summer slide’ – keeping students engaged over the long holiday period. The result? Students approach September with renewed confidence and a deep understanding of what the following two years will entail.

Preparing for A-levels

As always, our approach to bridging tuition is highly tailored and carefully targeted. We work with students to identify and address individual learning gaps before they can spiral into A-level anxiety. This is particularly important for those taking a new subject, like economics or psychology. Most students won’t have taken these topics at GCSE level, so laying the groundwork over the summer provides a critical advantage.

Beyond honing subject knowledge, we look closely at ways of working. We often ask our students to complete some trial questions in advance to practise independent learning, before we discuss the answers together. This move to more unstructured, student-led study is often one of the biggest hurdles to overcome, so we introduce research strategies, build critical thinking skills and look at efficient time management. Not only will this help our students navigate the world of A-levels – these are all essential attributes for higher education, and beyond.

Ongoing support

With the right foundations in place, we can continue to guide students through their A-level studies, with support from subject-matter experts and access to a wealth of extra resources. From exam techniques to university applications, our holistic approach is designed to make the move to higher education seamless, successful and stress-free.

In the meantime, we congratulate all our GCSE students on completing their exams. Do get in touch with the team for more information on tackling the world of A-levels to come.
