The summer of learning

Keeping children engaged with their studies over the summer can be a challenge. Last year is already a distant memory, and September seems so far away. But with ‘summer slide’ a genuine concern, how can parents help their children stay on top of their learning, without sacrificing essential downtime?

Keeping a summer diary is a great way to build vocabulary and encourage children to express their feelings effectively in writing. Similarly, sending postcards to friends and family will ensure they’re still putting pen to paper, and thinking about how to share their latest adventures in an engaging way.

With writing covered, another challenge is to keep children reading. Classic novel or light-hearted page-turner, it really doesn’t matter. The most important thing is that they stay in the reading habit – and by branching out, they may just discover a new author or genre that cements a lifelong love of reading.

We use our maths skills on a daily basis, often without realising it. So encourage your children to recognise their every-day problem solving, and think about how they’re putting their maths to use. Not only will this help keep their maths’ minds sharp, it will reiterate how important the subject is to our daily lives.

Finally, don’t be afraid to get creative. See every experience as a potential learning opportunity. Bring history to life by visiting a local monument. Brush up language skills with a trip abroad. Or just get the grey matter working over a boardgame at home.
