While part of the joy of summer is switching off, doing a little prep before September rolls around will help ensure a smooth start to the new school year. So here are our top tips to ease you into the autumn term.
Sleep tight – longer lie-ins and later nights can be great fun, but it takes time to readjust back to a term-time routine. Aim to reinstate your usual bedtime and morning wake-up calls at least one week before term starts.
Start right – with foreign travel and jam-packed days, it can be easy for breakfast to take a back seat. But make sure your cupboards are well stocked in time for the new term, as sending children to school without a proper breakfast can seriously impact performance and wellbeing.
Shop ahead – there are usually summer sales throughout August, so take the opportunity to stock up on school essentials in advance.
Set goals – they don’t have to be rigid, or academically focused. But discussing what your child wants to get out of the coming year will help set the tone for the new term, and foster independence and ownership.
Seek help – going up a year can be a big step for many children. So if they’re concerned about keeping up, or are worried about a particular subject, consider lining up some extra tuition to get them off to a confident start.
